HISTORICAL NOTE

As a result of the scars suffered both physically and mentally by soldiers during World War II, a new medical specialty was formed - Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. John Converse, MD, came to New York University in 1947, when the Division of Plastic Surgery was started. It was then that they began to create the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery (IRPS), which focused on interdisciplinary cooperation and rehabilitation and the social, psychological and financial needs of the patient.

In 1951 Dr. Converse and Lawrence D. Bell formed the Society for the Rehabilitation of the Facially Disfigured, now known as the National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction. A pilot program was started at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital. As the Institute grew, it needed to relocate to have the advantages of a major medical center. In 1957, plans were made to locate the Institute at NYU. A fund-raising campaign was started with a goal of two million dollars. One million dollars was contributed by what is now the Mellon Foundation and the other one million was raised by the Society for the Rehabilitation of the Facially Disfigured.

In 1961, NYU offered a plastic surgery residency and Bellevue Hospital became part of the program. The new University Hospital opened in 1963, and the Institute officially opened. Dr. Converse was Director of the Institute until his death in 1981, when Joseph G. McCarthy, MD, succeeded him. By 1977 the division had grown to include 18 plastic surgeons and 50 other physicians, consultants, and administrative personnel and 21,000 disfigured patients had been treated. During 1992 alone, the Institute operated on 6328 patients. By the time the Institute reached its 40th birthday in 2003, it had emerged as a leader in the relatively new field of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION

This collection consists of the administrative records of the Division of Plastic Surgery - Instititute of Reconstructive Surgery. There are 19 record series. The records include letters, research proposals, floor plans, newspaper articles and selected publications. The records document the creation of all the services that are part of the Institute, such as Hand Surgery, Microsurgery, and the Cleft Palate Center. The records illustrate the function of courses and conferences in the academic setting. One subseries, the Smithsonian exhibit, "The History of Plastic Surgery" is of special interest. The exhibit was prompted by the efforts of Dr. Converse and the office of Senator Jacob Javits. Another highlight of the collection is the presence of heart-wrenching letters written by prospective patients. One such subseries was the response to advice columnist Ann Landers' column about Down's Syndrome, which mentioned the Institute. The subseries of records regarding National Institutes of Health grants is also very informative.

Restrictions: To view material less than 20 years old, please obtain written permission from the current director of the Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.
