    Two men reviewing images in the University Hospital (present day Tisch Hospital) Cytology Laboratory, circa 1955. One of the figures in the image is Emanuel L. Hecht, MD.

    Dr. Hecht taught at New York University College of Medicine as an Instructor in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology (1945-1950), and Assistant Professor (1950-1955), and Associate Professor (1955-1960). He taught as Clinical Association Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the New York University School of Medicine from 1970 to 1978.

    Open-Heart Surgery at University Hospital

    A television cameraman records a briefing given by two men. They may be the cardiologists Edmund H. Reppert and A. Wilbur Duryee (not confirmed).

    One of a series of photos from an open-heart surgery performed during a live telecast broadcast by NY Channel 5 on May 6, 1958. The three-year-old patient, Mabel Chin, was operated on by Jere Lord, Jr., MD, at University Hospital. Dr. Lord narrated the surgery as it took place. The telecast was cosponsored by the New York Heart Association to familiarize the public with the safety and benefits of heart surgery.

    Dr. Jere W. Lord, Jr. (1910-1999), taught at New York University Medical School as Professor of Clinical Surgery and served as the president of the New York Heart Association.

This photograph was published with the caption “Lining up of Babies’ Wards Patients” on page 25 of the Annual Report of the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital, 1907. The photograph was also used by the Department of Public Relations in the 1967-1968 NYU Handbook.
