About the Archives

The Lillian & Clarence de la Chapelle Medical Archives serves as the final repository for the institutional records of NYU Langone and all affiliated institutions. The Archives also contain records of preceding institutions including the Bellevue Hospital Medical College.

The Archives was established as a department of the Ehrman Library in 1968. The primary purposes of the Archives are to collect, preserve, organize and to make available institutional records of enduring administrative, legal, and historical value, as well as papers of individuals who played a significant role at NYU Langone or who spent a major portion of their careers here.

In 1983, Dr. Clarence E. de la Chapelle endowed the NYU Medical Library Archives in memory of his late wife of 51 years, the former Lillian Buckmann. This endowment has allowed for the acquisition, description and conservation of invaluable documents, letters, and historic records relating to the history of the school and NYU Langone Health.

Archives holdings include:

  • Official records of administrative and academic departments
  • Photographs
  • Audio and visual materials
  • Manuscripts
  • Rare books
  • Medical instruments and antique microscopes
  • Paintings by noted medical illustrator and alumni Frank Netter
