Dr. Converse taught at the New York University College of Medicine as an Assistant in Surgery (1939-1947), an Instructor in Surgery (1947-1948), Assistant Professor of Clinical Plastic Surgery (1948-1952), Associate Professor of Clinical Plastic Surgery (1952-1957), and Lawrence D. Bell Professor of Plastic Surgery (1957-1981). He also served as the head of the Institute for Reconstructive & Plastic Surgery.

Portrait of Marion Baldur Sulzberger, MD (1895-1984). Dr. Sulzberger became director of the New York Skin and Cancer Unit in 1947. From 1949 to 1960, he served as Professor of Dermatology and chairman of the Department of Dermatology at New York University Medical School. Dr. Sulzberger was named professor emeritus in 1960.

Portrait of Paul Ferdinand Schilder, MD (1886-1940). Dr. Schilder was born in Vienna and received his MD from the Medical University of Vienna in 1909. A prominent Austrian psychiatrist, he emigrated to the United States in 1929. From 1930 to his death in 1940, he served as medical director of the psychiatric division of Bellevue Hospital and research professor of psychiatry at New York University College of Medicine.

Carte de visite portrait of Frederic Shepard Dennis, MD (1850-1934). Dr. Dennis received his MD from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1874. He taught at Bellevue Hospital Medical College as an Adjunct Professor of Surgery (1881-1883) and Professor of Surgery (1883-1898). Dr. Dennis introduced Lister's antiseptic methods in operative surgery in the United States. His friendship with Andrew Carnegie is said to have influenced the gift of the Carnegie Laboratory to the College of Medicine. Built in 1884, this was the first laboratory in the country established for teaching and investigation in bacteriology and pathology. Dr. Dennis was made one of its directors.

Portrait of Frank Anthony Calderone, MD (1901-1987), upon his 1946 appointment as Director of the Interim Commission of the World Health Organization. Dr. Calderone received his MD from University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1924. From 1931 to 1935, he served as an Instructor in Pharmacology at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College. He later taught in the New York University College of Medicine’s department of Preventive Medicine as an Instructor (1938-1942), Assistant Professor (1942), and Lecturer (1942-1947). Dr. Calderone served as Director of Health Services for the United Nations Secretariat from 1951 to 1954.

Portrait of Edward Gamaliel Janeway, MD (1841-1911). Dr. Janeway served as Professor of Diseases of the Mind and Nervous System, Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Pathology and Practical Anatomy during his time at Bellevue Hospital Medical College and University & Bellevue Hospital Medical College (1881-1907). He served as the first dean of University & Bellevue Hospital Medical College when it merged in 1898. In 1878, Dr. Janeway hired the famous pathologist Dr. William Welch upon his return to the United States. From 1875 to 1881, Dr. Janeway served as the New York City Health Commissioner.

He also served as Professor of Clinical Surgery (1874-1894), Professor of Orthopedic Surgery (1874-1882), and Emeritus Professor (1894-1896) at University Medical College.

A well-known surgeon and public health officer, he undertook a survey of New York City Health conditions in 1865 on behalf of the Council on Hygiene and Public Health. The Report of the Council, referred to as the Magna Carta of municipal sanitation in the United States, resulted in a law passed in 1866 which established the Health Department. Dr. Smith was a founder of and the first president of the American Public Health Association.
