He served as chair of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry from 1942 to 1969 and held the role of dean of the New York University School of Medicine from 1960 to 1963.

Dr. Zitrin received his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1945. His long and accomplished career at New York University School of Medicine began when he was appointed to the medical faculty in 1949. In 1967, Dr. Zitrin became a full professor of psychiatry. From 1955 to 1968, he was Director of Psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital Center, and from 1962 to 1964, he served as Director of Psychiatry of the New York City Department of Hospitals.
