Photograph of Henry Sherwood Lawrence, MD (1916-2004), seated in a classroom. Dr. Lawrence received his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1943. He joined the faculty of NYU School of Medicine in 1949 and taught there for more than 50 years. Dr. Lawrence was a leader in delineating the functions of the lymphocyte in cell-mediated immunologic processes. Among his many achievements, he served as director of the NYU AIDS Research Center from1989 to 1994.

Portrait of Hans Horst Meyer, MD (1853-1939), inscribed to Dr. Emanuel Libman in November 1929. Dr. Meyer was a German pharmacologist, most famous for his discovery of the Meyer-Overton hypothesis of anesthetics.

Signed portrait of Ernest Lewis McEwen, MD (1867-1930). Inscribed “To Dr. Howard Fox, with all good wishes, Ernest L. McEwen, 3/25. ‘30.” Dr. McEwen spent his career at Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL, where he served on the dermatology faculty.

Portrait of Joseph Lister, MD (1827-1912), printed with his signature in the “Gallery of Outstanding Physicians and Naturalists” for Munchener Medicinishcen Wochenschrift (Munich Medical Weekly). Dr. Lister was a British surgeon and a pioneer of antiseptic surgery.

Anthony J. Lanza

Portrait of Anthony Joseph Lanza, MD (1884-1964). Dr. Lanza organized and directed the Institute of Industrial Medicine at NYU Medical Center beginning in 1947. A leader in industrial medicine and one of the discovers of silicosis, he was awarded the New York University Presidential Citation in 1960.

John Hugh Mulholland

Portrait of John Hugh Mulholland, MD (1900-1974) in uniform, inscribed “to Clarence de la Chapelle, best regards, John Mulholland." Dr. Mulholland received his MD from University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1925. He later became Professor of Surgery at NYU Medical College. Dr. Mulholland is noted for his research in the metabolic aspects of surgery and diseases of the pancreaticoduodenal area.

James F. McKernon

Signed portrait of James Francis McKernon, MD. Dr. McKernon taught in the department of surgery at the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital. He served on the school’s board of directors for many years, including terms as board president in 1912, 1914, 1920, and 1928. Dr. McKernon also served as President of the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital from 1920 to 1929.
