Open-Heart Surgery at University Hospital

One of a series of photos from an open-heart surgery performed during a live telecast broadcast by NY Channel 5 on May 6, 1958. The three-year-old patient, Mabel Chin, was operated on by Jere Lord, Jr., MD, at University Hospital. Dr. Lord narrated the surgery as it took place. The telecast was cosponsored by the New York Heart Association to familiarize the public with the safety and benefits of heart surgery.

Dr. Jere W. Lord, Jr. (1910-1999), taught at New York University Medical School as Professor of Clinical Surgery and served as the president of the New York Heart Association.

Portrait of Daniel Bennett Roosa, MD (1838-1908). Dr. Roosa received his MD from University Medical College in 1860. He taught at University Medical College as a Lecturer on Diseases of the Eye and Ear (1863-1874) and Professor of Ophthalmology (1874-1882).
