Milton Helpern

Portrait of Milton Helpern, MD (1902-1977). Dr. Helpern held the position of Lecturer on Forensic Medicine at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College from 1934 to 1936. He then taught as Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine (1936-1950), Associate Professor of Forensic Medicine (1950-1954), and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Forensic Medicine (1954-1974) at New York University College of Medicine. In 1974 he became Professor Emeritus at New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Helpern was the Chief Medical Examiner for New York City from 1954 to 1973.

Signed photograph of Milton Helpern, MD (1902-1977), with specimen skulls, taken in the Legal Medicine Museum at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Dr. Helpern held the position of Lecturer on Forensic Medicine at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College from 1934 to 1936. He then taught as Assistant Professor of Forensic Medicine (1936-1950), Associate Professor of Forensic Medicine (1950-1954), and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Forensic Medicine (1954-1974) at New York University College of Medicine. In 1974 he became Professor Emeritus at New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Helpern was the Chief Medical Examiner for New York City from 1954 to 1973.

Portrait of Gerald Lawrence Klerman, MD (1928-1992). Dr. Klerman received his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1954. At the time this photograph was taken, he was the Director of Research, Psychiatric Service, at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Edward Lawrence Keyes

Portrait of Edward Lawrence Keyes, MD (1843-1924), inscribed “E.L. Keyes, 1903.” Dr. Keyes received his MD from University Medical College in 1866. He became a Lecturer and then Professor of Syphilology and Genito-Urinary Surgery at Bellevue Hospital Medical College (1871-1889).

Joseph W. Howe

Portrait of Joseph William Howe, MD (1843-1890). Dr. Howe received his MD from University Medical College in 1866. He taught as a Lecturer (1868-1872) and Professor of Clinical Surgery (1872-1879) at University Medical College. He was Clinical Professor of Surgery at Bellevue Hospital Medical College from 1879 to 1883.

Christian Archibald Herter

Portrait of Christian Archibald Herter, MD (1865-1910). Dr. Herter taught at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College as Professor of Pathological Chemistry from 1898 to 1903.

Text on back of photograph reads: “Born September 3, 1865; M.D. from P&S in 1885; Columbia University; Professor of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at P&S, 1903-1910; Professor of Pathological Chemistry at Bellevue Hospital Medical College, 1898-1903; Died in NYC on December 5, 1910.”
