Photograph taken during the ceremony awarding Joseph Louis Pasteur Vallery-Radot, MD, the New York University Medal for Distinguished Achievement. Dr. Pasteur Vallery-Radot (second from left) was the grandson of Dr. Louis Pasteur and the head of France’s Department of Public Health in the years following World War II. This photograph was taken in the Medical Science Building on December 20, 1956. Also featured are Dr. George Ellis Armstrong, President Carroll Vincent Newsom, and Dr. Marion B. Sulzberger.

Bellevue Hospital - Joseph Decatur Bryant Clinic

Photograph of Professor Joseph Decatur Bryant, MD (1845-1914), leading his Surgical Clinic at Bellevue Hospital Medical College circa February 1910. Medical student Isidore Harry Goldberger, donor of the photograph, is fourth from right in the second row of the audience.

Dr. Bryant received his MD from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1868. He taught as a Professor of Surgical Anatomy, Surgery, and Orthopedic Surgery at Bellevue Hospital College from 1875 to 1914. Dr. Bryant also served as the Commissioner of Health of both New York City and New York State, Surgeon-General of the National Guard, and personal physician to President Grover Cleveland. In 1893, he operated on Cleveland for sarcoma of the left upper jaw.

Dr. Hecht taught at New York University College of Medicine as an Instructor in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology (1945-1950), and Assistant Professor (1950-1955), and Associate Professor (1955-1960). He taught as Clinical Association Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the New York University School of Medicine from 1970 to 1978.
