Herman N. Eisen

Portrait of Herman N. Eisen, MD (1918-2014). Dr. Eisen received his MD from New York University College of Medicine in 1943. He taught at New York University College of Medicine as a Fellow in Medicine (1947-1948), Assistant in Medicine (1948-1949), Assistant Professor of Industrial Medicine (1949-1953), and Associate Professor of Industrial Medicine (1953-1955). In 1968, Dr. Eisen received the Medical Alumni Scientific Award on Alumni Day. An important researcher in the field of immunology, he was influential in establishing the usefulness of equilibrium dialysis with purified antibodies and the affinity of combining sites.

Charles Gottlieb

Portrait of Charles Gottlieb, MD (1886-1960). Dr. Gottlieb received his MD from University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1907. He was on the faculty of the New York University College of Medicine from 1933 to 1952, teaching in the Department of Radiology. From 1947 to 1949, he was Acting Chairman of the Department of Radiology, and from 1948 until his retirement in 1953, he served as Chair. He held the title of Professor Emeritus of Radiology from his retirement in 1952 to his death in 1960.

Clarence E. de la Chapelle

Portrait of Clarence E. de la Chapelle, MD (1898-1987). Dr. De la Chapelle received his MD from University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1922. He joined the faculty of the medical school in 1925, where he remained for the duration of his career as a leading cardiologist. Dr. De la Chapelle held various leadership roles at the medical school, including serving as Assistant Dean and Associate Dean from 1943-1948, and as Associate Dean of the Post-Graduate Medical School from 1948-1963. On February 18, 1971, the Bellevue Hospital Medical library was named for, and dedicated, to Dr. Clarence E. de la Chapelle. In 1983, he endowed the NYU Medical Library Archives in memory of his late wife of 51 years, the former Lillian Buckmann.

Saul J. Farber

Portrait of Saul Joseph Farber, MD (1918-2006). Dr. Farber received his MD from New York University College of Medicine in 1942. He spent his career at the New York University College, and later School, of Medicine as a professor of Medicine from 1948 to 2000. Dr. Farber served as Acting Chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1962 to 1963, Acting Dean of the School of Medicine and Acting Deputy Director of Medical Center from 1963 to 1966, and Chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1966 to 2000. He also held the titled professorships of Nathan Friedman Professor of Medicine (1966-1975) and Frederick H. King Professor of Internal Medicine (1978-2000).

Austin Flint, III

Signed portrait of Austin Flint, III, MD (1868-1955). Dr. Flint received his MD from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1889. He taught at Bellevue Hospital Medical College as Assistant to the Chair of Physiology (1889-1892), Adjunct Professor of Obstetrics (1893-1895), Professor of Obstetrics (1895-1897), and Professor of Obstetrics and Clinical Midwifery (1897-1898). Dr. Flint then taught at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College as Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology (1898-1924), Professor of Obstetrics (1924-1933), and Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics (1933-1955).
