Bellevue Hospital - Entrance Gate

Exterior view of the Bellevue Hospital Gatehouse entrance, erected in 1885 on the north side of 26th Street midway between First Avenue and the East River and the East River, demolished in 1929. The Gatehouse originally had gas lanterns on either side of the gate; in this photograph they have been removed, which dates the image to later in the structure’s existence.

The railing at the top of the two staircases in the photograph was a section of the original railing in place at Federal Hall in Manhattan in 1789 when George Washington took the oath of office as President.

Bellevue Hospital - Sturgis Pavilion

Image

Exterior view of Bellevue Hospital Ward 40, also known as Sturgis Pavilion. Child patients can be seen beneath a tent in outdoor cribs and cots, with doctors and nurses in attendance. The Sturgis Pavilion was used by the third medical division for the treatment of female patients until it was torn down in 1924. The building faintly visible behind Sturgis Pavilion housed a ward for treating alcoholism (upper floor) and an ambulance garage and stable (lower floor).
