Pin is circular, gold and blue, featuring a torch and the letters "BS" in the center. Edge of pin features the text "NEW YORK UNIVERSITY NURSING" in gold lettering against a blue background.

Pin is circular and silver-toned with a dark violet outer ring. The center features the NYU seal with the words “Perstare et Praestare” - which is To Persevere and To Excel. The outer ring is inscribed with text "New York University MDCCCLXXXI." 1831 is the year NYU was founded.

Image of Alwin Max Pappenheimer, Jr., MD (1908-1995), on p. 42 of the 1954 NYU Medical Violet yearbook. In 1941, Dr. Pappenheimer joined the faculty of the Department of Microbiology at New York University College of Medicine. He served as assistant professor (1941-1946), associate professor (1946-1949), professor (1949-1958), and chair of the Department of Microbiology (1956-1958).
