Egbert Le Fevre

Photograph of a painting of Egbert Le Fevre, MD (1858-1914). Dr. Le Fevre received his MD from University Medical College in 1883. He taught as Adjunct Professor of Practice of Medicine (1895-1898), Associate Professor of Therapeutics (1898-1905), Professor of Physical Diagnosis & Diseases of the Chest (1898-1905), and Professor of Clinical Medicine (1905-). From 1898 to 1914, he served as Dean of the University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College. The medical school library was named after him.

Samuel Leidesdorf

Portrait of Samuel Leidesdorf (1881-1968). Mr. Leidesdorf joined the board of the New York University Medical Center in 1948, initially serving as the Chair of the Building Committee. He served as Chairman of the Board from 1956 until his death in 1968.

Leopold Lichtwitz

Portrait of Leopold Lichtwitz, MD (1876-1943). In 1919, Dr. Litchwitz became the head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Hamburg’s Altona Municipal Hospital. He eventually became director of the hospital. In 1931, he became director of Berlin’s Rudolf Virchow Hospital. He was removed from his post by the Nazi regime in 1933. After emigrating to the United States, Dr. Lichtwitz became director of the Department of Internal Medicine at Montefiore Hospital.

Henry Sherwood Lawrence

Photograph of Henry Sherwood Lawrence, MD (1916-2004), seated in a classroom. Dr. Lawrence received his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1943. He joined the faculty of NYU School of Medicine in 1949 and taught there for more than 50 years. Dr. Lawrence was a leader in delineating the functions of the lymphocyte in cell-mediated immunologic processes. Among his many achievements, he served as director of the NYU AIDS Research Center from1989 to 1994.

John Hugh Mulholland teaching in the amphitheater

Photograph of John Hugh Mulholland, MD (1900-1974) instructing in the amphitheater at the NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Mulholland received his MD from University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1925. He later became Professor of Surgery at NYU Medical College. Dr. Mulholland is noted for his research in the metabolic aspects of surgery and diseases of the pancreaticoduodenal area.
