Dr. Scharff taught at Albert Einstein College of Medicine as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cell Biology, Director of the Division of Biological Sciences, and Assistant Director of the Cancer Center. He developed a new approach to the exploration of the structure and function of immunoglobins.

In 1989 he became Clinical Professor of Medicine at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College.
