Photograph of Sol Sherry (1916-1993). Dr. Sherry received his MD from New York University College of Medicine in 1939. He later became professor and co-head of the Department of Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine.

Paul Ferdinand Schilder

Portrait of Paul Ferdinand Schilder, MD (1886-1940). Dr. Schilder was born in Vienna and received his MD from the Medical University of Vienna in 1909. A prominent Austrian psychiatrist, he emigrated to the United States in 1929. From 1930 to his death in 1940, he served as medical director of the psychiatric division of Bellevue Hospital and research professor of psychiatry at New York University College of Medicine.

Bertha Rader

Photograph of Bertha Rader, MD (1911-2011). Dr. Rader began her medical career as an EKG technician at Bellevue Hospital. After graduating from the New York University School of Medicine in 1945, Dr. Rader became Chief of the Cardiac Clinic, and ran the electrocardiography service at Bellevue Hospital for decades. She held the title of Associate Professor of Medicine at the School of Medicine until 2000.

Carl Julius Rothberger

Portrait of Carl Julius Rothberger, MD (1871-1945). The photograph is signed, with a note in German to Dr. Emmanuel Libman dated December 12, 1932. Dr. Rothberger became Professor of General and Experimental Pathology at the University of Vienna in 1904, and held the position of deputy head of the Institute of General and Experimental Pathology from 1924 until he was forcibly retired by the Nazi government in 1936.

Donal Sheehan

Photograph of Donal Sheehan, MD (1908-1964) wearing a lab coat. Dr. Sheehan taught at New York University Medical College from 1937 until his death, apart from a 1947-1948 term as general director of the Commonwealth Fund. He served as acting dean of the medical school for three years during World War II, as chairman of the Scientific Committee of the NYU-Bellevue Medical Center, and as director of the Medical Center from 1953-1955.

James A. Shannon

Portrait of James A. Shannon, MD (1904-1994). Dr. Shannon received his MD from University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1929. He taught as an Instructor in Otorhinolaryngology at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College from 1933 to 1940, and then as Assistant Clinical Professor (1941-1947), Clinical Professor (1948-1950), and Professor (1951-1960) of Otorhinolaryngology at New York University College of Medicine. From 1955 to 1968, he served as Director of the National Institutes of Health.

Irving L. Schwartz

Portrait of Irving Schwartz, MD (1918-2011). Dr. Schwartz received his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1943. Dr. Schwartz was the first Dean of the Graduate School of Biological Sciences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, holding the role from 1965 to 1980, when he became Dean Emeritus. He was also the first Chair of the Department of Structural and Chemical Biology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Director of the Mount Sinai Center for Polypeptide Research. In 1973, he was the recipient of the Medical Alumni Achievement Award from the New York University School of Medicine.
