Currier McEwen

Portrait of Osceola Currier McEwen, MD (1902-2003), better known as Currier McEwen. Dr. McEwen received his MD from University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1926. He taught at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College as an Instructor in Medicine from 1932 to 1933, and at the NYU College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine from 1933 to 1939. Dr. McEwen made major breakthroughs in the treatment of arthritis and rheumatism, clinical, pathologic, immunologic studies of rheumatic fever, systemic lupus erythematosus and various types of arthritis.

L. Lichtwitz

Dr. Lichtwitz headed the Department of Internal Medicine at the City Hospital in Altona, Germany. He emigrated to this country in the 1930's and was appointed director of the Department of Internal Medicine at Montefiore Hospital.

Otto Loewi

Portrait of Otto Loewi, MD (1873-1961). Dr. Loewi was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1936 for his work on acetylcholine. A refugee of the Second World War, he was invited to join the NYU Department of Pharmacology as Research Professor in 1940.
