Donal Sheehan

Portrait of Donal Sheehan, MD, seated at a desk. Dr. Sheehan taught at New York University Medical College from 1937 until his death, apart from a 1947-1948 term as general director of the Commonwealth Fund. He served as acting dean of the medical school for three years during World War II, as chairman of the Scientific Committee of the NYU-Bellevue Medical Center, and as director of the Medical Center from 1953-1955.

He served at Bellevue Hospital Medical College from 1887 to 1895 as an Assistant to the Chair of Materia Medica and Therapeutics (1887-1892) and Assistant to the Chair of Principles and Practice of Medicine (1892-1895). Dr. Carlisle taught in the Department of Medicine at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College from 1898 to 1935, becoming a full Professor of Medicine in 1924.

He served at Bellevue Hospital Medical College from 1887 to 1895 as an Assistant to the Chair of Materia Medica and Therapeutics (1887-1892) and Assistant to the Chair of Principles and Practice of Medicine (1892-1895). Dr. Carlisle taught in the Department of Medicine at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College from 1898 to 1935, becoming a full Professor of Medicine in 1924.

Edward Gamaliel Janeway

Portrait of Edward Gamaliel Janeway, MD (1841-1911). Dr. Janeway served as Professor of Diseases of the Mind and Nervous System, Professor of Medicine, and Professor of Pathology and Practical Anatomy during his time at Bellevue Hospital Medical College and University & Bellevue Hospital Medical College (1881-1907). He served as the first dean of University & Bellevue Hospital Medical College when it merged in 1898. In 1878, Dr. Janeway hired the famous pathologist Dr. William Welch upon his return to the United States. From 1875 to 1881, Dr. Janeway served as the New York City Health Commissioner.
