Surrounding the edge of the shield is a white border, with the words "ST. CLARE'S HOSPITAL SCHOOL OF NURSING" printed in gold capital letters. The original pin was unavailable but an image is available in the collections of the Dittrick Medical History Center (CWRU) at Case Western Reserve University.

Pin is circular and silver-toned with a dark violet outer ring. The center features the NYU seal with the words “Perstare et Praestare” - which is To Persevere and To Excel. The outer ring is inscribed with text "New York University MDCCCLXXXI." 1831 is the year NYU was founded.
