Historic Images

The image shows the cover of the Annual Announcement of Lectures for the Medical Department of the University of New York, for the session 1841-1842, the first year of operation for the department. The pages of this document have been preserved between sheets of rice paper.

Signed engraving of a portrait of John Revere, MD (1787-1847). The caption reads “Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physics in Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia.” Dr. Revere taught at University Medical College from 1841 to 1847 as Professor of Theory & Practice of Medicine.

Illustration of Granville Sharp Pattison, MD (1791-1851). Dr. Pattison taught at University Medical College as Professor of Anatomy from 1841 to 1851.

Illustration of Martyn Paine, MD (1794-1877). Dr. Paine served as Professor of Theory & Practice of Medicine at University Medical College from 1841 to 1867.

Illustrated portrait of Valentine Mott, MD (1785-1865). The caption reads, “Valentine Mott M.D., Professor of Surgery in the University of New York. Drawn by H. Inman, Engraved by AB Durand.” Dr. Mott served as Professor of Principles, Practice & Operations of Surgery at University Medical College from 1841 to 1850.

Signed portrait of John William Draper, MD (1811-1882). Dr. Draper taught at University Medical College as a Professor of Chemistry from 1838 to 1865 and a Professor of Physiology from 1850 to 1867.

Signed engraving of a photographic portrait of Gunning Samuel Bedford, MD (1806-1870). Dr. Bedford taught at University Medical College as Professor of Obstetrics and Diseases of Women from 1841 to 1864.

An illustration of the first home of the NYU School of Medicine (1841-1851), located at 659 Broadway. In 1851 the school moved to a larger building on 14th Street between Third Avenue and Irving Place. This building burned down and temporary accomodations were used until the school moved to 26th Street, opposite Bellevue Hospital.
