Edgar H. Bates

Photograph of Edgar H. Bates, MD (1905-1990). Dr. Bates received his MD from University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1931. He taught at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College as an Assistant in Surgery from 1934 to 1939. Dr. Bates then taught at New York University College of Medicine as Instructor in Surgery (1941 to 1954) and Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery (1954-1987).

Eugene Braunwald

Portrait of Eugene Braunwald, MD, in a lab coat. Dr. Braunwald received his MD from the New York University School of Medicine in 1952. He later became Chief of the Cardiology Branch of the National Heart Institute. At the time of this portrait, he was serving as Hersey Professor and Chairman, Department of Medicine, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Braunwald made important contributions in the fields of cardiovascular hemodynamics and diagnostic techniques, clinical cardiology, and internal medicine.

He served as Director of New York University Medical Center (1969-1973), Vice President for Health Affairs (1969-?), Professor of Medicine (1970-1982), Dean of the School of Medicine and the Post-Graduate Medical School (1970-1982), Provost of the New York University Medical Center (1973-1982), and Executive Vice President for Health Affairs (1976-1982).

David Bloom

Portrait of David Bloom, MD. Dr. Bloom taught at New York Post-Graduate Medical School as an Instructor in Dermatology and Syphilology from 1928 to 1938. He then taught in the Department of Dermatology and Syphilology at the New York University College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor (1948-1950), Associate Professor (1950-1957), and Professor (1957-1961).

Leo Buerger

Portrait of Leo Buerger, MD (1879-1943). In 1908, Dr. Buerger identified the vascular disease thromboangiitis obliterans, also known as Buerger’s Disease. Along with his achievements in cardiology, he was known for his skill as a pathologist, bacteriologist, and urologist.

Frank A. Calderone

Portrait of Frank Anthony Calderone, MD (1901-1987), upon his 1946 appointment as Director of the Interim Commission of the World Health Organization. Dr. Calderone received his MD from University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1924. From 1931 to 1935, he served as an Instructor in Pharmacology at University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College. He later taught in the New York University College of Medicine’s department of Preventive Medicine as an Instructor (1938-1942), Assistant Professor (1942), and Lecturer (1942-1947). Dr. Calderone served as Director of Health Services for the United Nations Secretariat from 1951 to 1954.

Joseph Decatur Bryant

Photograph of an illustrated portrait of Joseph Decatur Bryant, MD (1845-1914). Dr. Bryant received his MD from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1868. He taught as a Professor of Surgical Anatomy, Surgery, and Orthopedic Surgery at Bellevue Hospital College from 1875 to 1914. Dr. Bryant also served as the Commissioner of Health of both New York City and New York State, Surgeon-General of the National Guard, and personal physician to President Grover Cleveland. In 1893, he operated on Cleveland for sarcoma of the left upper jaw.
